Like many cartoonists before him, ‘Cookson’ started his cartooning career in Fleet Street. He was the Social/Political Cartoonist for The Evening News from 1969-76, and then took over the TV strip ‘The Niteleys’ for the Daily Sketch. He was a regular cartoonist for Punch (responsible for many of its front covers), The Sporting Life and Today.
Cookson has been a regular contributor to The Spectator, The Express Newspaper Group, The Sun, The Mail on Sunday and thelondonpaper.
Cookson has illustrated over 20 books by various authors – and published several himself, including Wine Lovers and ‘Til Divorce Us Do Part. His industry clients include Veuve Clicquot; Fanshawe Lofts; Fitzdares – and The London Cuppa Ltd., who’s distinctive black and white packaging for a blend of tea (available in Harrods and Sainsbury’s) features a Cookson frieze. He also produced cartoons for the 2004 Olympic Games.
Cookson’s cartoons grace the walls of many famous people who have been his subjects. These include politicians of all three major parties – and members of the royal family. He is listed in the recent publication ‘The UK’s Top 100 Cartoonists’.
